Cross-Channel • Boulogne Folkestone • 1920

Here is a lovely old postcard, c1920, of the cross channel boat, Onward, leaving Boulogne bound for Folkestone. What a beautiful ship. I especially like the cut-away stern detail of Edwardian ships and the rake of the funnels. The card is printed in softly textured chromo-litho.

Can you see the demon in the clouds?

Here are some bookmarks from the 1920s and 1930s that are associated with the railway services between London and Paris, and the associated cross-channel services.

The railway greatly expanded the need for reading material…and WH Smith began as a railway station bookstore. So these advertising bookmarks aren’t as unusual as you might think.
