The World Cup in Brazil reminds us of how football became the global game – it travelled by train! More accurately, it travelled with the engineers that built the railway system in Latin America.

For example, the introduction of football to Brazil is credited to Charles Miller. In Argentina, it was Thomas and James Hogg who introduced the game. In Chile, the game was introduced as an element of schools providing the refined sensibility of English gentlemen to the local elites.
